On the Mesabi Iron Range, Hibbing lives beside the Hull-Rust-Mahoning mine, an open pit so vast its far wall turns violet in the winter dusk. This is a town that once moved itself south, building by building, to let the mine grow, so it knows something about shifting a great deal of material. Snow comes early to the Range and stays late, and Melhorn's Construction brings that same habit of heavy work to snow removal in Hibbing, plowing drives and lots and making space for the early starts a northern winter demands. A cleared yard under a streetlight at six in the morning, the snow stacked high and out of the way, is a small monument of its own up here.
