Glyndon sits where the prairie starts for good — a grid of shelterbelts and grain and a rail line running straight out of sight. Roadworks clears snow through that country: driveways and approaches plowed open, walks shoveled to the door, salt and sand laid down where a step or a slope glazes over. A Clay County storm often finishes at midnight while the wind keeps working until four, so the honest time to plow is the hour nobody wants. Headlights, blowing snow, the shelterbelt going past one tree at a time — then the drive is open and the truck moves on to the next one. Morning arrives and finds the whole thing already handled.
