Ely Lawn Co.

About Ely Lawn Co.

Sheridan Street thaws first, then the yards behind it, and for a few weeks every May the whole of Ely is mud and anticipation. Ely Lawn Co. starts as soon as the ground firms up, clearing winter's litter, taking down the first shaggy growth, and setting the shape a lawn will keep all summer. This is a town of outfitters and packs and canoes riding on car roofs, and a mowed yard says the house is being looked after while everyone else is out on the water. Mowing, trimming and cleanup run right up until the snow arrives. The line between a lawn and the woods ought to be a decision rather than an accident — that's the work.
