Deer River sits where the farm country gives up and the Chippewa National Forest takes over — birch, jack pine, wild rice water, and yards cut out of the middle of all of it. Wood and Stuff Outdoors LLC mows those, from village lots off Highway 2 to lake places out toward Deer Lake that want a wide pass and a long trim line. Northern summers are short and quick: grass goes from brown to knee-high in about three weeks, and then it is a run straight through to August. They edge, trim back what the woods are forever trying to reclaim, feed the thin sandy turf, and clean the yard up in spring and again once needles and leaves have dropped. Up here, a mowed clearing with a sharp edge on it looks like a small, deliberate order held against a very large forest.
