North of town, Highway 46 runs up toward Winnibigoshish through country that is more water than land, and by late August the rice beds have gone gold in the shallow bays. Lake Country LandCraft looks after the lawns scattered through it — resort ground, lake homes, and yards along the roads out toward Ball Club and Bowstring. Mowing and trimming carry the summer, with edging where turf meets gravel and feeding for grass that has to make a living in thin, sandy soil. Weeds get pushed back before they take a foothold, and the cleanups at either end of the year deal with whatever the forest has dropped. It can be a long way between jobs out here, and it is worth every mile when a yard comes back into shape.
