Crosby sits in the Cuyuna country, where the old iron mines have gone to deep clear lakes and the tailings ridges have grown up in birch and pine. Holmvig Excavating LLC pushes snow across that up-and-down landscape — plowing driveways and lots, opening long wooded approaches, clearing walks, and hauling piles away once the banks get too high to push over. Heavy machines and steep grades belong together here; a driveway cut into a mine ridge does not clear itself. Crosby, Ironton, Deerwood, Riverton and Aitkin form the working circle. Coming back down a freshly opened drive at first light, pines loaded white on both sides, is a fine way to spend a winter morning.
