Ricard Sod Farm

About Ricard Sod Farm

The ground under Crookston is old lakebed — black, deep, and level clear to the horizon — and grass takes to it the way a crop does, which here it is. Ricard Sod Farm works in that trade: growing turf in the field, cutting and delivering sod, laying it in, and the lawn care that follows while new sod knits itself down. There is a specific pleasure in the moment a bare yard becomes a lawn in a single afternoon, seams pulled tight, the whole thing suddenly and completely green. Crookston, East Grand Forks, Fisher, Mentor and the farms in between make up the delivery range. Grass grown in valley soil and rolled out onto a valley yard tends to know exactly where it is.
