The Red Lake River takes its time getting through Crookston, looping back on itself so that a good many yards in town end at a riverbank. Late October is the turning point for JT Lawn Maintenance and Snowremoval — the last cut of the year goes on those slopes, the leaves come off, and then the mower deck comes off too. After that it is winter work: plowing drives, clearing walks and steps, ice control, and staying ahead of the wind that funnels along the river bottom. Crookston, East Grand Forks, Fisher and Red Lake Falls make up the run. Two trades, one year, and the river marks the seam between them.
