Romeo's Lawn and Snow

About Romeo's Lawn and Snow

February in the St. Croix valley is the honest month. The river runs black between its ice shelves, the cold settles into the gorge and stays, and the snow that falls has no intention of going anywhere. Romeo's Lawn and Snow is out in the middle of it — plowing driveways, shoveling steps and walks, opening the tight corners no blade can reach. There is a particular pride in a set of front steps cleared down to the tread at six in the morning, and in coming back to do it again when the wind fills them in by noon. Deep winter here asks the same thing every time: make the way out, and keep it that way.
