Up on the hill above Highway 169 the Iron Man looks out over Chisholm, and the yards below him hold stumps left from trees that came down seasons ago. Stahl's Stump Grinding takes those out under the grade, backfills the chips and tamps them, so a mower can run straight across and grass has a chance by the second summer. The saw work comes first when it needs to: removal of a poplar hanging over a garage, trimming a maple back off the wires along an alley. September suits the job here, birch already turning, ground still open, evenings long enough to finish. A ground-out stump is a small thing on its own, but a yard without one is the first time that yard looks finished.
