Up on the hill above Duluth the snow means it — a northeast wind off Lake Superior, and Canosia Township gets buried while the harbor gets rain. Balsam and birch bend under the load, the township roads narrow to one lane, and every driveway between Pike Lake and Twig needs opening before morning. This is plowing country: long approaches, deep banks, and the discipline of pushing piles back early so there is somewhere to put the next foot of it. Steps and walks are cleared down to the boards, and sand or salt goes wherever the grade would send a car sideways. When the sky finally clears over St. Louis County it comes out hard and blue, and everything is open, and nobody had to think about it.
