The glaciers that ground across this part of Minnesota left Brainerd its sand, its lakes, and its stones, and Brainerd Boulders took its name from what the ice left behind. On that sandy outwash ground the crew tends lawns through the growing months, mowing and trimming yards that sit atop ten thousand years of glacial till. Come winter, an ice-age patience applies: snow falls and gets plowed, falls again and gets plowed again, until the drives and walks of the lakes area stay open no matter what February decides. There is something steadying about working land shaped by ice in a town where ice still runs five months of the year. The boulders aren't going anywhere, and neither is the work.
