Iceworks

About Iceworks

February in Blaine is a negotiation with ice. A midweek thaw slicks the driveways, a night in the single digits sets it hard, and by morning every walk in town is a hazard wearing a thin dust of snow. Iceworks lives in that margin. Plowing is the loud part of the job; the quiet part is the scraping, the salting, the second pass that takes a driveway from passable to properly bare. There is a sound a shovel makes on clean concrete — a ring, almost — and that sound is the goal. When the freeze-thaw starts its late-winter games, Iceworks shows up ready to play.
