Powell Excavating

About Powell Excavating

Deep in a Bigfork winter the cold has a sound of its own: the creak of spruce, the tick of a woodstove, the long hush of a night when the thermometer gives up trying. Powell Excavating, an excavating outfit up in this far-north town, puts its attention on clearing snow once the season locks in. Moving earth and moving snow share a grammar: push, lift, stack, square it off. By the time a low sun clears the black spruce, the lane out front is open and the banks stand like cut stone. Where winter is the longest chapter, that path out is what lets a day begin.
