Beaver Bay is built on rock, dark volcanic stone that breaks the Beaver River into falls on its last run to Lake Superior. Settled in 1856, it is one of the oldest communities on Minnesota's North Shore, with homes tucked among birch and spruce on ground that rises quickly from the water. North Rock services keeps those approaches open through the winter, clearing snow from drives and walks after the storms come through. Even in March a storm can still swing in off the lake and bury the shore again. When the clouds break at night, stars hang sharp over a freshly cleared driveway, and the river murmurs on beneath its ice.
