Balsam shares its name with the fir that scents these north woods, and a cold morning here smells faintly of resin and lake ice. North Lakes Lawn follows the whole calendar in this lake-country place, cutting grass while the birches are in leaf and opening snowbound drives once winter puts the lakes to sleep. In August the job is sun-warmed grass and the drone of a mower drifting out across the water; in February it's a plow pass in the dark with the yard light still burning. Both end with the same reward: a place that is easy to arrive at and pleasant to look out on. Up here, that is half of what home means.
