North Star Lawn

About North Star Lawn

Minnesota's motto is L'Étoile du Nord, and on a clear night in Balkan Township its namesake, Polaris, hangs exactly where it should, above the dark crowns of the pines. North Star Lawn borrows that fixed point of light for its name and puts it to work by daylight, cutting and edging yards across this quiet corner of the Iron Range. Late summer shows the work off well, when the grass has shrugged off July and the first frost is already being whispered about. A lawn cut even and edged true becomes a clearing of order among the birches, the kind of yard a passerby slows down to admire at dusk. A guiding light for a name, and a yard as calm as the night sky above it: that's the whole idea.
