About B.A. Chesley Co.

A clipper drops down off the Canadian prairie and by four in the morning the section roads east of Fergus Falls have filled corner to corner with fine, blowing snow. B.A. Chesley Co. is out in it, plowing driveways across Aurdal Township, cutting the drift back off the approach, shoveling a path to the door so nobody has to wade. Wind is the real problem in open country — a lane opened at midnight can close again by breakfast, so the work is measured in return trips. There is a plain pleasure in a yard light shining on bare gravel while the field behind it is still white and moving. Winter here asks to be answered early, and it gets answered.
