Freezing rain is Oakland County's meanest trick, and Maple Road glazes over well before anybody's alarm goes off. Marie Maintenance is out on that — salt down early, walkways cleared, driveways scraped where the crust has already set hard. The work is unglamorous and exacting: knowing which slope will run and refreeze, which north-facing walk holds ice past noon, where a shovel still beats a machine. When the storm turns over to snow, the plows go out and the whole route runs again. Nobody ever notices safe footing, and that is exactly the point.
