The Red Cedar slips through the middle of Williamston, slow and brown beneath the willows, and the ground near it grows grass like it means it. Aardvark Lawns cuts and trims through those river blocks, edging where lawn meets walk and pulling the leaves off in autumn. Bottomland lawns come in soft after a wet week, so the work starts with reading the ground before a wheel ever touches it. Come October the maples along the water let go all at once and the cleanup crews follow them street by street. Williamston and its neighbors — Okemos, Haslett, Perry, Dansville — make up the territory.
