Late August in southern St. Joseph County flattens out into heat, horizon, and the grain elevator standing up over everything. Grass Guys mows through it, with weekly cuts, trimming around posts and mailboxes, edging, and hauling off the leaf drifts once the maples let go in October. White Pigeon sits a short run north of the Indiana line, and the yards out here run big, with room for a mower to open up and lay down an even pass. Nothing fancy about the job; just grass held at the right height and edges kept honest. By evening the lawns look combed, and the crickets take over.
