By February the ice on Cedar Island Lake is thick enough to hold shanties, and the wind that crosses it does not slow down for anybody's driveway. CDP Landscape LLC takes the storms as they come in White Lake Township, pushing snow back off drives and lots, opening the walks by hand where a blade cannot reach, and spreading salt on the shaded turns that never see enough sun to melt on their own. There is a rhythm to a long night of it: circle, clear, stack the piles where they will not block a sightline, move on. Come morning the mailboxes are reachable and the porch steps have grip underfoot. Winter here is long, and being ready for it is its own kind of pleasure.
