On an October morning the fog lies low in Holliday Forest, where the Rouge bottomland keeps its own weather, and the rest of Westland wakes under a sky the color of tin. The Lawn Shepherds, LLC keep a route through all of it — yard to yard along Cherry Hill and Newburgh, raking off the last of the leaves, taking the grass down short and even before the ground goes hard. Tending is the whole of the trade: a mown lawn, a trimmed border, an edge along the walk you only notice because nothing about it is ragged. When the first real storm walls in from the west and buries the whole grid of streets, that route runs again in the dark and in reverse — driveways plowed open, porches and walks shoveled, salt laid where ice builds under a north wind. By April the ground softens, the cleanups start over, and the mower goes out for a first pass across grass that has been waiting all winter. A flock of ordinary yards, kept.
