On Westland's western side the Holliday Nature Preserve runs wild, floodplain woods and standing water and brush that answers to nobody. A kept lawn a few streets away is the deliberate opposite of that, and it stays that way only because someone tends it. Hagen's Landscape, LLC does the tending: mowing, string trimming, edging and the cleanups that bookend a Michigan growing season. There's something worth noticing in the contrast, the tangle of the preserve on one horizon and a level, even yard right where you're standing. Both are good; only one of them takes a mower.
