West Olive lives between the dunes and the farm ground, close enough to Lake Michigan that the wind carries sand in summer and snow all winter. Zelenka Landscaping mows, trims and edges from the drives near Pigeon Lake out to the section roads, then plows and shovels once the lake starts throwing weather ashore. Lake-effect never arrives as one polite delivery — it comes in bands, hours apart, which means going back out and doing it over. In the warm months the satisfaction is a lawn cut sharp against a sandy border; in the cold ones it is a drive opened clean to the pavement before dawn. Between them sit the cleanups: April's haul-out and November's leaves, both finished before the ground turns.
