Wind that has crossed a mile of frozen lake arrives with nothing to slow it down, and the shoreline streets of West Bloomfield drift shut faster than the inland blocks ever do. Lakeside plowing was built for those lots — short, steep, narrow drives running down toward the water, where a plow has to place snow carefully because there is nowhere generous to put it. The work is driveways opened, walks and steps cleared, salt laid on the pitch where the runoff refreezes overnight. Some mornings the lake is smoking with ice fog and the only tracks on the road are the truck's. Leaving behind bare pavement and a clean path to the door is the entire measure of a good night.
