Lake Michigan sends its winter across the state sideways, and by the time a squall reaches US-131 it has found every driveway in Wayland at the hours nobody is awake for. From The Ground Up works both halves of that year: snow removal through the dark months, lawn care once the fields go green again. Plowing out here means the long farm-lot approaches toward Hopkins and Dorr as much as the short in-town aprons, and the goal is the same either way — a clear lane and a clean apron before the first car needs it. Come July the trucks pull mowers instead of blades, and the week turns to cutting, trimming and sweeping the curb line clean. The name states the order of the work: start where the dirt is, and everything above it comes out right.
