In February the pond at Halmich Park goes flat and pewter, and for a few weeks the whole city takes on that same color. Michigan Lawn and Snow Inc. works the deepest stretch of the Warren winter, when snow stops being an event and becomes a condition — plowing driveways and lots, clearing walks, spreading salt on ice that forms and reforms under the freeze and thaw. The result is narrow and real: black pavement where there was white, banks pushed back square, a path to the door wide enough for two. Nobody photographs it. Everybody notices.
