The Shiawassee River bends past Vernon quietly enough that you can hear it under the trees on a still evening, and it keeps time for the whole year here. Vernon Outdoor mows, trims and edges from the first green through leaf-drop, then turns to plowing, shoveling and ice control once the village goes white. In between come the cleanups — the March haul-out of everything winter left behind, and the November work of getting leaves off the grass before it freezes to them. A small town shows its care at the curb, and a straight-cut lawn or a driveway squared off to the pavement says it plainly. The trucks run from Vernon out toward Durand and Corunna, wherever the road goes.
