The ridges northeast of Lowell wear sugar maples, and for two weeks every October the whole of Vergennes Township turns the color of a struck match. Mapleridge Lawn Care L.L.C. is out in the middle of that — final mows, trimming, edging, and cleanup after cleanup as the maples let go all at once. Hill lawns cut differently than flat ones; the machine has to be driven rather than merely steered, and the finish tells you which one happened. Then the grass sleeps, the ridges go bare and blue, and April brings the whole thing back around. Serving Vergennes Township, Lowell, Saranac and the roads toward Belding.
