Vanderbilt sits high in Otsego County where the Sturgeon River comes down cold and fast and the snow totals climb well past what the rest of the state sees. Green's Excavating works that winter: plowing drives and lots, pushing banks back before they close an entrance, clearing the way out to the highway while it is still dark. Up here a storm does not so much arrive as settle in for three days, and the job is to keep pace with it rather than wait it out. A drive opened at five in the morning, with room to turn around and the mailbox still standing, is the whole point of the truck.
