Vandalia is a small village in the lake country of Cass County — a few streets, a crossroads, farm ground and water all around it, and a history of sheltering freedom-seekers that the town has never set down. Freeman's Lawn and Tree keeps its yards cut and clean through a long southwest-Michigan growing season, mowing, trimming, edging and carrying off the clippings and leaves when the year turns. Summer here is humid and generous; grass grows like it means it, and the mowing schedule keeps its own calendar.
