Down in the bottom corner of Cass County the old Chicago Road runs straight for the Indiana line, and when it snows the wind has all that flat farmland to work with. Squalls come across from Lake Michigan and can drop more on one road than the next one over ever sees, so nights get long and doubled back on. Piles go well off the pavement, because the next storm needs somewhere to go too. A cleared drive at first light with the fields still white on both sides is a fine thing to leave behind.
