Lisa Johnson spends those weeks mowing, trimming and edging lawns around the village and along the roads running out toward LeRoy and Reed City. Northern soil and cool nights make for grass that comes in slow and fine, which is exactly the kind that rewards a careful cut. There is a quiet pleasure in finishing a yard at golden hour, the pines going black behind it and the lines still holding. A small village, tended lawns, one short season made the most of.
