South of Traverse City the land climbs away from the Boardman valley in long wooded hills, and every driveway up there is a small argument with gravity once it snows. Walton Contracting settles the argument at two in the morning — plowing the grades, opening the turnaround at the top, shoveling the steps and salting the slick patch that forms where the shade never leaves. Storms here can run all night off Lake Michigan and still be going at breakfast, so the work comes in rounds rather than one tidy pass. A drive cleared down to the gravel, wide enough for a delivery truck to back into, is the ambition. Out toward Kingsley, that counts as a good night.
