Out past Grawn and Kingsley the driveways run a quarter mile through jack pine before they ever find a house, and one night of steady snow can close them completely. Popp Excavating keeps those lanes open — plowing long rural drives and yard aprons, stacking and relocating banks before they eat the width of the road, clearing turnarounds where a delivery truck has to come about, salting the grades that ice up first. When a storm parks itself over the county and the totals climb past what a shovel can answer, reach matters: the snow gets moved somewhere, not just shoved a little farther along. Dawn arrives late in January this far north, and the good version of the morning is a set of headlights finding bare gravel all the way out to the road.
