Before sunrise the snow around South Boardman goes blue, and the only sound is the wind moving along the old rail grade. Down to Earth is already working then — driveways plowed open and left wide enough at the top for a car to swing around without a shovel. Steps, walks and the path to the mailbox get shoveled and sanded while the rest of the township is still dark. Kalkaska County winters run long and stack up, so each storm is cleared with the next one in mind and the snow carried to the far side of the yard. The reward is a place that still looks tended in the middle of February.
