By June the vineyards and orchards south of the village have leafed out, cyclists are threading the back roads, and Three Oaks smells like cut grass every Saturday. Greenthumb is part of that sound — mowing, trimming and edging, keeping village lots and country yards trim from the first warm week onward. Southwest Michigan grows things enthusiastically, which means lawn work here is never finished, only current. There is a quiet pleasure in the moment the mower shuts off and the lawn holds its stripes in the late light. That is what the whole day was for.
