West of Tawas City the land opens up, and open land is where snow does its worst — not falling so much as traveling, stacking into drifts across two-tracks and long country drives. Bear-It Excavating takes on that kind of snow: plowing, pushing the banks back before they close a lane in on itself, clearing drives and lots that a shovel would never finish. Iosco County winters are long and patient, and the work runs at night and before dawn more often than not. There is something plainly satisfying about pulling up to a buried drive and leaving behind a clean, wide lane. When the wind fills it in again, they come back and do it once more.
