Surrey Township is sand and oak and jack pine, ground that grows a lawn only if somebody keeps after it. Heritage Outdoor Services keeps after it — mowing through the long green weeks around Farwell, trimming close to roots and fence lines, edging where the gravel drive wants to creep into the grass. Mid-July mornings up here start cool enough for a jacket and end smelling like warm pine needles, and the mower runs straight through the middle of that.
