South of Sturgis the roads run dead straight toward the Indiana line, past hayfields, white barns and buggy tracks worn into the gravel shoulder. Groff's lawn care mows out along those roads and in town both — house lawns, long side yards, the ground around a shop or a shed. Grass is cut on a schedule so it never gets out ahead of itself, then trimmed tight to posts, foundations and fence wire. In May everything grows at once and the week fills up fast; by September the pace eases off and a cut holds a good while longer. Either way the aim stays the same: a yard that looks looked-after every time the truck pulls out of the drive.
