East of the village the land wrinkles into the oak ridges and kettle ponds of the Waterloo country. Burley's Outdoor Services keeps lawns out that way and in town both — mowing, string trimming, bed edging, cleanups at either end of the season. Late afternoon is the good hour here; the light comes sideways through the oaks and every stripe in a fresh yard shows. Autumn is the long haul, leaf after leaf off the hardwoods until the ground lies bare and orderly again. It is outdoor work in a township that has always been mostly outdoors.
