Seven in the morning on the west side of Springfield: engines starting, the open land out toward Fort Custer still holding mist, the day's heat not arrived yet. Phoenix Lawn & Power is already cutting — mowing, string trimming, edging along walks and drives, moving property to property while the air is still cool. Michigan grass grows through the whole long middle of the year, and the only way to stay ahead of it is a schedule you actually keep. A finished lawn at eight in the morning is a small complete thing: even, sharp at the borders, hard surfaces blown clear. By noon half the block looks new.
