Spalding is cedar swamp and hayfield and long straight stretches of highway, up where Menominee County runs down toward the Wisconsin line. Lawn work here means mowing out to the tree line, trimming around fence posts and outbuildings, edging what little sidewalk there is, and cleanups in spring once the frost finally lets go of the ground. Yards run big in this country — measured in acres more than in minutes — and the tree line is always trying to move back in. Late in August the smell of cut hay gets into everything, and a finished yard looks like a clearing kept on purpose. Powers, Hermansville and Stephenson are all a short run down the road.
