September in Southfield has a sound to it — buses on Eleven Mile before seven, and lawns that grew all summer finally slowing down enough to hold their shape. Teacher Lawn and Landscape works both halves of the year on that kind of schedule: mowing, edging, trimming and mulch through the green months, a cleanup when things green up and another when they let go, then plowing, shoveling and salting once the driveways go white. Winter here is rarely one enormous storm; it is a long series of small ones, so the plow work is about being dependable rather than dramatic. The lawns come back in April wanting a cleanup and a first cut, and the whole cycle begins again. Same streets, same hands, whatever the sky happens to be doing.
