About Earth Works Outdoor Builders

At three in the morning, Pontiac Trail is one set of headlights and a wall of falling white. Earth Works Outdoor Builders is out in it, pushing a clean line down South Lyon driveways while the rest of the block is still asleep. Storms come in off the plains here fast and dry, and the job is to have the pavement bare and salted before the first coffee is poured. There is a real satisfaction in a drive that ends in a squared-off corner, in a pile stacked where it won't block anyone's view of the road. By sunrise the crew is gray-eyed and the town steps out onto ground it can walk on.
