There is a week most Octobers in South Haven when the maples are still dropping and the first flakes are already testing the air. Withey's Lawn and snow works straight through that overlap — leaf cleanup, final mows, one last round of trimming and edging, and then the switch to plowing drives and lots, clearing walks and treating ice. The lake keeps the shore a few degrees warmer while it buries the ground inland, so two properties ten minutes apart can need two different trucks. Reading that is half the job. The other half is the plain pleasure of a bare drive and a clear walk before anybody else is awake.
