Arctic Solution

About Arctic Solution

At four in the morning the Soo is ice fog and streetlight, the St. Marys River steaming below locks that are closed for the season. Arctic Solution goes out into it — plow routes through the drifts, steps and walks opened by hand, salt and sand on the ice a Superior thaw leaves behind. Snow here is counted in feet over a winter rather than in single storms, so the job is repetition done right: the same driveway cleared again, and again, before anyone needs it. Nothing about a Chippewa County winter is short, and nothing about it can't be handled either. By the time the light comes up gray behind the International Bridge, the drives are open.
