On a June evening in Shelby Township the sprinklers tick on one after another down the cul-de-sacs, and the last light lies flat and gold across a hundred back yards. Bailey's Lawn Service LLC spends its days in those yards — mowing, trimming the fence lines, edging where the turf tries to creep out over the walk. The clay ground out here grows grass with real enthusiasm once the humidity arrives, so the rhythm stays weekly and steady from April into October. Spring cleanups open the season and leaf work closes it, and in between there is the plain pleasure of a lawn that reads well from the road. Fireflies come up out of a freshly cut lawn like sparks; that alone is worth the mowing.
