East of Scottville the roads run out toward Custer through corn ground and old orchard, and by mid-October the whole county smells of cut stalks and wet leaves. That is the busy stretch for Larsen's Landscaping & Lawn Care, LLC: the last mowings, edges recut clean, leaves gathered off the grass before the ground turns hard. Come January the work is headlights, a plow blade and a shovel on a drifted drive, opened wide enough for the mail carrier, the school bus and everything else a morning expects. Then the thaw comes along the Pere Marquette and it all begins again with a first cut. Mason County keeps its own calendar, and this is a business that keeps it too.
